36th Street Pedestrian Bridge Will Serve Greenbelt

A new 200-foot pedestrian bridge over the Boise River will provide a vital link for Greenbelt users and a safe route to school for Garden City children.

Located directly above the future Ray Neef MD River Recreation Park, the 12-foot-wide bridge will feature a concrete deck and oxidized steel beams.

The bridge will connect Boise’s Greenbelt near Quinn’s Pond and the future Esther Simplot Park off Pleasanton Street in west downtown to Garden City’s greenbelt and 36th Street Live Work Create neighborhood, home to the Waterfront and Alley Arts Districts.

Construction is expected to begin in June with completion in September 2010. Greenbelt access will be limited during construction; signs will mark temporary detours around the site.

The bridge will serve thousands of commuters and Greenbelt users seeking alternative transportation options through the heart of both cities. Children attending Whittier Elementary School will have a safe, direct route to school away from busy traffic on Main Street and Veteran’s Memorial Parkway.

Upon completion of the river park, the bridge will provide a prime vantage point for pedestrians to enjoy the excitement of watching boaters navigate the waves of the Boise River.

The bridge is a cooperative project between the City of Boise and Garden City. Garden City has received a $550,000 federal stimulus grant to fund the bridge construction. The grant is administered through the Idaho Department of Transportation.

The City of Boise has provided matching funds totaling $290,000 for bridge design and construction of the bike path connection to the bridge.
